Meiyas Blacksmithing Guide and Reference

This will be a guide for those who want to start blacksmithing. It will also be a reference for current smiths.
[Basics]
To learn Blacksmithing, first equip a Blacksmithing Hammer. Elen sells this in Bangor. Equipping it will give you Blacksmithing rank Novice. Talking to Edern about skills with the hammer equipped will give you enough proficiency to get to Rank F.
Making an item requires the Blacksmith hammer to be equipped along with a Blacksmith Manual.
Gilmore sells the majority of them, while Fleta sells the special ones. Simply click on the anvil and place the required materials onto the new window. However, most items require several successes to finish completely.
Each success builds the percent completed towards 99.9%. At 99.9% completed, you finish the item with the required finishing materials.

There are four outcomes to a blacksmithing attempt. The following are approximations.

  • OutcomeBase CompletionExample Outcome (Dagger: 40% completion per attempt)
  • Great Success100~150%+40%~60%
  • Success—-50~100%—-+20%~40%
  • Failure——-0~50%———-+0%~20%
  • Great Failure-50%~0%—-—--20%~0%

Base completion is different for every item, and the results of each attempt are random in the above ranges (approximately). Great successes only occur when you attempt to make an item at least 2 ranks higher than your current Blacksmithing rank. It seems to occur more often at exactly 2 ranks higher, with each rank higher above 2 reducing the chance. When a great failure occurs, it is possible to have some of the materials used in the attempt refunded. The range is approximately 0~50% returned.

Even though great successes only occur when making items 2 ranks higher, it is still possible to have a great success with items 1 rank higher and below. The game does not count it as a great success and displays it as a normal success but the completion gained is equivalent to a great success.

[Party Bonus]

Each extra person (not including yourself) that has Blacksmith Rank F or higher will contribute 5% towards Base completion. For example, a dagger with a 40% base completion per attempt would have a bonus of 40 x0.05 = 2% bonus each person. A full party of 8 would be +35% base completion, which would be 40×0.35 = 14%. The 40% base completion becomes 54%, suddenly giving you the chance to finish the item in two attempts. The bonus is higher if a person with a higher Blacksmith Rank than you is in the party.

[Rain Bonus]
Rain strength varies between 0-20. 0 strength rain has no benefit, while a 20 strength is a thunderstorm. A thunderstorm gives a bonus of 10% to completion, which is equal to 2 extra people in your party. A strength 10 rain gives a bonus of 5% to completion, or 1 extra person in your party. The completion % keeps track of decimals, so for example, 1 extra person while making a Dustin Silver Knight Armor(10% completion) would give a bonus of 0.5%, which is not listed but is in effect.

[Finishing]
Finishing blacksmith items at 99.9% requires finishing materials and a blacksmith mini game. The mini game is fairly simple, 5 X’s float around the mini game window for about 10 seconds and stop at random points in the window. You must place your mouse at the center of these X’s and left click when the bottom bar turns green. The bar will only progress after the X’s stop moving. Each click resets the bar, and the X you clicked on (or the nearest X from your mouse if you missed or ran out of time) is “hit” and no longer counts. You must click on 5 different X’s.

Though you want to click on the center of each X, the mini game mouse cursor is quite large in the beginning. The cursor becomes smaller and easier to aim at ranks C and 8. In addition, the result of your click is also randomized. Assuming you click dead center on an X, the actual result is moved nearby the majority of the time. The actual chance to land the result onto the center of an X is about 1~5%. Approximately 30% of the time the result lands 1 pixel away. And the rest of the time it lands 2 Pixels away. The result always land on one of the following positions: center, 1 pixel left, right, down, down left, down right, 2 pixels right, down, left. These approximations are based on rank 8 and above. Ranks below rank 8 are even more inaccurate, with ranks N-9 possibly giving you results up to 3-4 pixels away from your click.

The X’s are surrounded by a bright red light so you cant see the exact pixel you need to hit (which is the center of the X anyway). Hits also generate a bright blue light, making it unclear how well you did. If you were to click the same spot 5 times you will notice the resulting blue lights do not stack onto the same spot, proving the randomness of the hits.

Sometimes, the mini game window glitches and the X lands onto a area you cannot click on. Unfortunately, there’s nothing that can be done and you must simply try to get it as close as possible. Clicking beyond the edge of the click-able mini game window results in a hit closest to the actual click-able window. In other words, the game will move your hit into a space that can be clicked on.

[Finish Quality]
It is currently unknown whether the order you hit the X or the timing it is hit has an effect on quality. Obviously, the closer your hit result is towards the center of an X, the better the quality of the item is produced. Your blacksmith rank adds a certain bonus towards the quality, most likely random, with the higher blacksmith ranks adding more quality points. Then the 5 hits of the blacksmith mini game is added onto this bonus (the closer the hit is to the center, the more points). The exact number for the blacksmith rank bonus and the hit bonus are unknown. However, if your hit result is very far from an X ( the game picks the closest X from your mouse), the item takes a severe quality penalty. If you don’t hit at all because the bar filled all the way, the item takes an even harsher quality penalty. Even 2 misses can cause your item to have -100 quality.

X-grade is not obtainable through blacksmithing. Currently they are limited to gachapon equipment that were set to X-grade stats.

A grade of B+ is the minimum grade required to get a signature on a crafted item.

—–End addition—–

There are qualities below D-, usually resulting in an item that’s the same stats as a store bought version or with negative stats. B+ ranks result in the smiths signature branded onto the item. Due to the lack of blacksmith rank bonus points, it is incredibly unlikely to get signed items until r8. To get a signed item before that requires several center hit results on the minigame (barring some secret method to gain points)

[Training Guide]
This guide assumes you already have rank 1 production mastery and you are smithing on a Monday! Each rank of production mastery adds 1% to the success rate. You need every possible 1% due to the high cost for each attempt. Monday also adds several % depending on the items rank compared to your own.

One thing to keep in mind, you do not get training exp for making items 2 ranks below your current rank. You do however, get finishing exp for items of any rank.
Get R1 Weaving, don’t bug people to make 1000s of the items you will need weaved.
Get R1 Refining, same reason.

At first glance it seems fairly simple. Only a single Iron Ingot for each attempt and the max training exp is 235. This means you don’t need to fulfill many training methods before you have the 100.00 required to rank up. But, you can only attain at max, 60 exp for doing regular successes. If we assume you completed 1 item for each of those 20 successes, you will have 20 finished items for 12.5 more exp. This means either you continue making items hoping for fails (not recommended), or you attempt the harder dagger/fine arrowhead for great successes.

Keep in mind great successes don’t occur very often (I estimate ~15-20% chance), and so it is hard to tell how many you will have to try until you get enough exp. Recommended path is to make rank D items first, as trying for the 10 great successes will yield you regular successes sometimes. The fail rate is also high, but that is fine because failing still yields you exp.

Right after the fairly easy rank F comes rank E. This is where most new players give up. For this rank, you are only allowed to make 1 item, Round shields. The material cost per attempt is 5 iron ingots. 5x from the last rank! But don’t be fooled, that doesn’t mean you only need 5x of rank F’s ingots to pass. The training exp for all methods have been reduced significantly. Due to the randomness of your results, again it is very hard to say how many times you will have to try to get 100.00 exp.

Things probably cant get any worse right? Too bad it does, though the jump is not as high as Rank F to E. The training exp has been reduced again. Just like Rank F, you cannot get 100.00 doing just normal successes. You will have to get around ~20 great successes (depending on your fails) minimum. You may continue attempting great successes but due to the high cost per attempt, and low success rate, it is recommended for you to stop attempting great successes after you get around ~20 of them.

For normal successes, Cuirassiers are recommended because they cost 3 ingots and no leather. Even though spiked caps have a higher success rate, you still get exp for failing so the higher fail rate for cuirassiers are OK. You can actually sell some of these helms (unlike round shields) to get some of your money back but don’t expect too much The material usually costs more than the selling price ( unless you price it very high, but then nobody will buy it)

Rank C poses a difficulty spike. You basically have to do twice as much work as the previous rank. For this rank there’s only 2 items you can choose to make. The training exp has been pretty much split in half, and the material costs is still high as ever.

As usual, great successes are required to pass the rank. At this point, fails give so little exp, that you pretty much have to complete all 50 great successes and the majority of normals as well. While your aiming for great successes you will get some normal successes and fails filled in too. After the great successes are done you just keep making Ulna Protectors until you rank up.

Rank B is a strange rank. No doubt there is a typo there for 1.00 exp for each finish. That said they never bothered to fix it so oh well. It does make things a lot easier, giving you a choice between making Spaika Boots that can be resold with some profit, or blitzing through the rank making Greave Boots.

Its not recommended to making Kirsten Boots because they are giant only, and Fine Leather is  much more expensive than Iron Ingots. It is recommended to make Spaikas unless you don’t mind losing gold to training. If you don’t mind losing gold then you can just go 100% Greave Boots. Going all Greave boots is also faster because you do not have to collect expensive Fine Leather.

Looks deceptively like the previous rank. Again, the finish gives 1.00 exp which is convenient. Like before, it lets you go 100% Successes, ignoring Great successes. In fact, in this case it is recommended for you to go 100% Light Melkas. Plate Mail is very expensive to make and you need Siren Bat wing masks to finish. Meanwhile, not only are light melkas easier to make, they are cheaper too and require only 1 Common Fabric to finish.

This rank and the previous rank is made much easier due to the 1.00 exp for finishes. You can also resell them but don’t expect much money, they are fairly cheap. One thing to note is that the exp for failing has been split in half again, nearing insignificant levels.

Here we are. This is where the TRUE blacksmithing begins. After the relatively easy previous ranks, rank 9 is on whole other level. First, you will notice the maximum exp is only 110.00. This means you have to do almost EVERYTHING to rank up. The 1.00xp for finishes is gone, and you no longer get any exp for failing. In addition, there are no Rank 7 armors, which means you are stuck making Valencia Giant Armor for Great Successes. It used to be worse back then, when giant armor and r1 Production Mastery did not exist.

Back then, you had to craft Rank 5 Armors with a mere 31% success rate for your Great Successes.  Luckily, the new giant armor makes thing easier. And by easier I mean from ultra hellish to only just very hellish. Though the order you do it does not matter, you will need to do all 40 great successes, and all 500 weapon successes. Finishing those 2 methods and the finish armor/weapons part leaves you with around a required 375 armor successes to rank up. You should do the Giant armor first so you can accrue some successes when you are trying to get Great successes.

The majority of the upcoming ranks follow this pattern, the training method only changes with the secondary item type (weapons-> shields->helms->etc)

You will fail, a lot. And you have to hope for lucky Great Successes, because the low success rate  lowers the chance for Great Successes even further. You are going to end up with a lot of armors you cant finish, due to lack of Siren Wing Masks. Either you toss them and lose money, or you get these masks somehow by doing siren or buying them (demand for these masks are super high). Either way, at this point you will need to INVEST into blacksmithing to train it, you will not get much of your money back.

*From this point on I wont add finishing materials to the estimated cost. Because either you will not  be able to accrue the necessary masks, or the finishing material is fairly easy to get. Most of the time, the cost of finishing items pale in comparison to the cost of making (masks are the exception).

Congratulations on passing rank 9! Now you get to do it again, except its WORSE. Here, most people wither away and give up, because you can no longer get training exp for the easy Light Melkas. Not only must you continue making more Giant Valencias, now you must make Plate mails for your regular successes. Alternatively, you can make Double Ring Mails, but its unlikely that you can get too many manuals to train with.

This is a huge difficulty spike, the cost between the 2 are incomparable. In addition, the shields you  have to make also take Fine Leather Straps. Hetero Kite Manuals only come from a field boss, and the Light Hetero Kite shield drops from bears. You will have to shop around for these manuals, or hunt them yourself. Not much can be said for this rank, it is basically twice as hard as the previous rank.

I will assume you did 100% light hetero shields. Its cheaper to make though selling it wont net you  any profit. Mainly, you will find Light manuals more often than non light versions.

This rank and the ranks ahead follow the same pattern. You finish all your great successes, then  shields, then 375 armor successes. The order does not matter though doing great successes first is recommended. Remember, you can finish any item to get finish exp, so if you need armor finishes or shield finishes (unlikely) you can finish Light Melkas and Round Shields to get exp.

From this point on you will have to use Finest Leathers. Worse, its unlikely for you to sell any of the helms you make. Then, its unlikely for you to complete even 30% of the armors you make due to lack of Siren Masks. What this adds up to be is a huge gold investment just to be able to rank up. An investment where you wont see much of your gold returned.

If you do not have an alternative income source, you wont be able to progress at all. You want to make as many Norman Helms as you can. This might not be possible depending on the rarity of the manual. The manual can only be obtained by fishing in Iria’s fishing boat. Rank 7 is one of the most expensive ranks, with most of the gold invested returning nothing.

It is recommended that you do not finish any Pelican helms you make. Toss the 99% completed helm onto the floor, its unlikely that you will sell it and the finishing materials are quite expensive. You can
finish any of the older helms that are cheap to make for training exp. You can make Giant Valencia for successes, but it is much more expensive and impractical. You can also make Graceful Helms for successes, but that uses silver and makes it much more expensive. The difficulty for Graceful Helms are also higher, resulting in more fails. Though you can possibly resell it, its not exactly practical due to Iria fishing boat manuals.

This rank and the ranks ahead follow the same pattern. You finish all your great successes, then  helms, then 375 armor successes. The order does not matter though doing great successes first is recommended.

As usual, things just get harder, not easier. At least this rank has items you can resell. You can no longer make (easy!?) plate mails, and are stuck making Valencias for regular successes. Strangely, feather masks are more readily available than Wing masks, giving you the possibility of actual finishing all your Valencia Armor (F)’s (at least I did). [Edit:This is no longer the case, Feather masks are just as rare now and just as expensive in Ruari]

Despite being able to get a return on some of your investment, you will still need to invest a lot to make any progress. Things take time to sell after all, and you must spend a lot of money to buy materials while you wait for your things to sell (which requires a fat bank). If you do not have a fat bank, progress will be a slow.

It is recommended to make Valencia Giants and Valencia Gauntlets. Valencia Giant still uses Fine  straps, you do not want to use the pricier Finest Straps if you can help it. Also, Valencia Gauntlets have 2 def, making them easier to sell, even if they cost more to make than Denver Gauntlets. Besides, Denver Manuals come from Ant hell treasure chests, how often will you see them around? If you can pass Rank 7, you can pass Rank 6 (it will just take more time)

This rank and the rank ahead follow the same pattern. You finish all your great successes, then  gauntlets, then 375 armor successes. The order does not matter though doing great successes first is recommended.

Here is rank 5 with another huge difficulty spike. For great successes, you must make Dustin Silver Knight Armors. Which is four ranks ahead! And extremely expensive to boot! The chance for a great success is less than 20%, but you still need to get 40 of them. The fail rate is so high, you wont be making any progress on the armors unless you get a lucky string of great successes. Strangely enough, while attempting the dustin armors, you will probably get more great successes than regulars. The most intimidating part of this rank is fulfilling the Great successes. The cost of fulfilling great successes by itself is almost as expensive as an entire previous blacksmith rank.

After fulfilling great successes you make more giant armors (you will have made 100+ of 99% completed armor by now). You can also choose to make Valencia (M)’s. Depending on pricing, the cost turns out to be relatively even. After the armors, you make Valencia boots. Luckily, Valencia boots are resell-able, as a lot of people buy it for looks (and to match Valencia armor). They are even usable by Giants. Sadly, they still only have 1 defense (and spaikas has 2 for some reason), so it may be slightly hard to resell depending on how you price it.

This rank is the last rank that follows the previous patterns. You finish all your great successes,  then Boots, then 375 armor successes. The order does not matter though doing great successes first is recommended.

The lower number ranks. Things get ridiculously hard at this point. Fine leather will only be used for dustin armors now. In addition, from now on the secondary item type are weapons. High ranking weapons that are expensive to make and pretty unsellable. Worse, they all have annoying finishing items, which means due to the large quantity that is being made, they will be trashed at 99%. And to top it all off, for the first time in a long while, the training exp gets reduced significantly. That 0.01 exp reduction suddenly adds another 100+ extra successes for you to make up. You also now need to get 10 more great successes for the same 20.00xp as before.

Dustin gets slightly easier, but not much. Again, fulfilling the great successes will be a enormous task by itself. After that you will make the cheaper Valencia Armor (M). Unless you have a alternative income source, your bank will feel the hit as its unlikely any server your in has enough Wing masks to supply a single smith, let alone SEVERAL. What this means is simple, you cannot make money off weapons, you can barely make 15% money off your armors. And dustin armors are very hard to sell. This all adds up to nearly 100% investment to train blacksmithing.

You will want to avoid silver at all costs. Not only is it expensive, but its rare, and you will need  a lot of it if you want to use it. For cost efficiency at this point, Great swords are the cheapest. Iron and copper are both plentiful, that said you will still need to get 1000s of them. Obviously, they are not resell-able, nor easily finish-able with those 4 tough string requirements. The majority of people don’t even use 2 handed weapons. The only weapon that’s remotely sell-able are the Japanese weapons, but that’s a gachapon manual and so your unlikely to make many of those.

Rank 3, the hardest rank of Blacksmithing. The training exp is reduced again, and you will pretty much have to do everything to rank up. Worse, the training count has gone up to 800, meaning you will be doing almost 400 more successes than the previous rank. The good thing is that Dustin wont fail a million times anymore. The bad news is that you now need 10 more great successes, for less exp than before.

For armors, there is only one remaining armor you can make. Not only is it fairly pricey, but you have to get up to 700 armor successes to past this rank! At this point, you will have consumed all available feather masks, and the armors no longer return their investment. Worse, weapons still don’t give any money (except rare Japanese manuals) so you better have a huge bank to make any progress in a reasonable amount of time. If you don’t have a huge bank (like me) you will have to find some alternative way to make money, or do siren dungeons yourself to get precious masks that can be used to resell armors.

For weapons, you can no longer make the cheap great sword. The next best thing are Vales great swords. Again, you want to avoid silver if possible, and Vales great swords only take iron and copper.  Plentiful they may be, you will need 1000s and 1000s of them. Of course, you wont be finishing them due to annoying finishing items and low resell-able.

For those of you that are curious, I am currently rank 3

After the incredibly difficult Rank 3 comes…… rank 2. Out of nowhere, the training method
completely changes and the result is that it is much easier than the previous ranks . You would think the final rank before you hit rank 1 would be incredibly difficult but it is not the case. If you can pass rank 3 then rank 1 is just beyond the horizon.

Training is simple, you ignore Successes (which can only be done with Dustin armors) and just do armor finishes. Simply finish 1000 Light melka chain mails for an “easy” 50.00 exp. Then finish 200 weeding hoes/sickles for 12.00xp weapon finishes. Then you do 760 weapon successes to finish up. Alternatively, you can do all 800 weapon successes and only 960 light melka’s, but the difference is very slight.

Not much can be said for this rank. The reason is that all required materials are very common, even if you do need a mass quantity of them. It may be easy compared to previous ranks, but that doesn’t mean its not expensive! The light melka’s you make can optionally be fragmented for 0-10 common leather and iron returned, if it succeeds. You wont be able to sell them for much anyway.

Acquiring Ingots is a much easier feat than acquiring Fine/Finest Leather. For common leather, it is well, fairly common. It drops incredibly often in Math dungeon (unlike fine/finest which has no area that drops it often), so you can hunt for it while you buy it too.

You are rank 1, you are finished! Why do you want the title?! Its not very good, and its horribly expensive. Well if you have too much money for your own good, then getting the master title is fairly straightforward. Just spend a lot of money. You don’t have much a choice in what you make, you obviously want to use easy to finish items to get finish prof. But unless you want to toss away your huge amount of 99% Dustin armors, you probably want to do that part first.

Sadly, for weapons you must use silver. And mythril if you want to make Dustin swords. Though copper is cheaper, your unlikely to find any claymore buyers. On the other hand, there is a small market for Dustin swords, not that you will be able to sell all of them. Your making a huge amount after all.

[Final Notes]
There are Fine and Finest Anvils that can be crafted and used in the Housing CH. These anvils increase the success rate by 5%, and 10%. From my own experiences, it does not actually increase it by that much. A same rank item, with a finest anvil, is boosted to ~98% success rate. Despite it showing 98%, experience shows that it definitely isn’t 98%. However, experience also shows that it is still higher than the ~88% rate from using Bangor anvils.

I used to keep a record of all my attempts and the results. Sadly that was about a year ago and my comp died and I had to reformat, losing my statistics. One thing I found interesting was that, pre-rank 1 Production Mastery, when rank 6 was the max, the Bangor anvils were roughly 10% less successful than it listed. I wouldn’t be surprised if devcat messed up and forgot to add production mastery onto blacksmithing, despite what it lists.

Its simple to test, do potion making. Ive always noticed potion making to be highly successful and accurate of its % success. Same with weaving and refining, a 98-99% success rate feels like a 98-99% success rate. Then you do blacksmithing and a 88% certainly does not feel like 88%. If you were to count it, RNG aside, you will find that most of the time it falls well below the listed success rate.

How does it even add it anyway? What does 1% success rate from production mastery translate to. How much of that 1% is a great success? fail? great fails? For all other skills besides tailoring, it simply adds 1% success rate, there are no other results.

Thats the end of my guide, feel free to point out any mistakes. Its fairly long and took awhile, so mistakes are bound to happen. I personally do not have any secondary income source, I make armors, sell them, and use the money to buy more materials to make more armors.

I do however, keep all my armors that I cannot complete. In storage, I still have around 37 plate mails, ~30 Valencia Armor (M), ~50 Valencia Giant Armor, and ~25 Valencia Armor (F). If I actually had masks to finish them, and sold the armors, then yea, blacksmithing can make a lot of money. Otherwise, any money you make is funneled right back into training money. Then, instead of making money, blacksmithing drains all your money to train itself. The “potential” to make money is misleading, I believe all the money blacksmiths make aren’t from blacksmithing at all. And if you had that much money to train blacksmith in the first place, you can spend your time and money not training blacksmithing and just get more money!

[Brionac]
Brionac is a weapon you get after completing G11. After equipping it and using the Shock skill, you can do several extra skills. One of them allows you to get skill experience.
After completing at least 30% of a particular training method, you can use Brionac to gain skill exp equal to 10% of that training method. This experience caps at 10.00 xp.

Using Brionac on Blacksmithing consumes 6.0 durability, and it costs 4 AP to repair each point. So every time you use Brionac on Blacksmithing, it will take 24 AP to repair. Whether its worth using will be up to you.
